Healing Your Inner Child: RESPAWN: Reliving Our Favorite Computer Games
BY RAM JERUEL VASQUEZ | DECEMBER 9, 2023
Life goes by like a blink of an eye. And with that, we all have to face the reality that we’re not getting any younger. Before we know it, every moment becomes a distant memory. But sometimes, we just couldn’t help but miss those carefree days of being a kid–just playing around and losing ourselves in the magic of computer games.
Do you remember the thrill of navigating virtual worlds? It can quickly turn competitive when you’re going against your friends, but what matters the most is that you always try your best.
As we hustle through adulthood, these gaming experiences serve as a sweet escape—a ticket back to a time when your toughest task was choosing the next game to play.
Let's take a nostalgic trip down memory lane to revisit some of our classic computer games and rediscover the impact they had in shaping who we are now.
Purble Place
Purble Place is the whimsical world of fun and challenges. With its colorful characters and delightful mini-games, it was the go-to spot of many young gamers. From solving puzzles with Comfy Cakes to mastering card matching with Purble Pairs, each game surely brought its own charm. And who could forget those sweet victories that made us come back to play again?
This game definitely sparked our imagination at a young age. It inspired us to explore and indulge in the joy of limitless possibilities, ultimately leaving a special mark on our childhood.
Bookworm
If you’re someone who's been fond of word puzzle games, then you must be familiar with the game that tested your vocabulary and critical thinking skills. How satisfying was it to spot longer words and connect the letters with the special tiles in order to get a higher score than your opponent? Of course, it felt good to learn new words and beat the odds.
Even though the Bookworm series stopped operating a few years ago, OG gamers will always remember the fun adventure it gave. Lex would undoubtedly be proud to see that the vocabulary we acquired from the game has become an integral part of our daily communication, a testament to its linguistic influence.
Minesweeper
Before Getting Over It and Only Up pushed our patience to the limit, there was Minesweeper. It’s a logic puzzle video game featuring a grid of clickable tiles, and your goal is to clear the board without detonating hidden mines scattered randomly on it. Are you one of the few people in the world who solved it in just one move? Well, most of us child-at-heart people found it hard to do so.
While it’s very frustrating to always fail in Minesweeper because it takes rare luck to win the game, somehow, we realize that’s the beauty of its concept. It's a 50-50 chance, teaching us the value of not being afraid of trying.
Solitaire
One of the most classic computer games in Microsoft Windows was Solitaire. Did you experience playing it when you were in the school’s computer lab or even at home when you just wanted to pass time?
In this game, you must create a sequence in each of the seven piles, arranging cards in descending order starting from King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, and so on. Players also need to build their tableau in alternating colors.
Today, the legacy of Solitaire still remains ingrained in the hearts of every gamer. It is a timeless reminder of the countless hours spent mastering the art of virtual cards.
Zuma
As a kid, admit it—Zuma was the game that took us forever to figure out how we can finish all the levels. It’s a pretty daunting task trying to prevent a chain of colored balls from reaching the end of a twisting path. However, I’m sure we enjoyed the rewarding thrill of shooting and finally matching three or more balls of the same color.
Zuma’s engaging and immersive gameplay indeed motivated us to strive for greatness. It instilled the drive within us to embrace challenges with both enthusiasm and unwavering determination.
Reliving our favorite computer games evoked so many memories and nostalgia. During those times of boredom and loneliness, they made us feel something and reminded us that, as little kids, we could be heroes.
Above all else, no one can deny that these games have become an important part of our lives, as they brought out the best in us and influenced who we are today. And even though we're older now, the game is never truly over.
